Petroleum History of Sudan

Commercial oil production began in 1999 when the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company brought the Heglig field in the Muglad Basin on stream, within three years making Sudan a net oil exporter. The 2011 division of Sudan redistributed much of the producing acreage, but significant reserves remain in Sudanese territory — in the Muglad and Blue Nile basins and offshore Red Sea zones. Independent surveys estimate Sudan's remaining technically recoverable reserves at 5–7 billion barrels of oil equivalent.

ALSERO Upstream and Mid-Stream

ALSERO's upstream portfolio includes participating interests in exploration blocks in North Sudan operated in partnership with national and regional energy companies. Seismic surveys using 3D acquisition technology have identified multiple drill-ready prospects, with first-phase drilling scheduled for 2025–2026. On the mid-stream side, ALSERO manages pipeline logistics contracts covering 340 kilometres of operating crude and product lines, with an engineering team of 180 specialists holding certifications from Lloyd's Register and TÜV Rheinland.

Port Sudan Terminal and Export

Port Sudan's petroleum terminal is the country's sole export gateway for crude oil and refined products. ALSERO holds a long-term operating service agreement for two of the terminal's tank farm berths — combined storage capacity of 180,000 cubic metres. Our tanker management subsidiary operates a fleet of four IMO-certified product tankers, completing 47 voyages in 2024 with a zero-loss-of-containment safety record.

Downstream Distribution and Energy Access

Sudan's downstream petroleum market is underserved relative to its population of 48 million. ALSERO's downstream subsidiary operates fuel distribution points across Khartoum State and Red Sea State, with expansion plans to Northern State and Kassala by 2026. Our LPG cylinder filling station near Port Sudan serves 180,000 households monthly, reducing reliance on charcoal and improving air quality.
