Petroleum History of Sudan
Commercial oil production began in 1999 when the Greater Nile Petroleum Operating Company brought the Heglig field in the Muglad Basin on stream, within three years making Sudan a net oil exporter. The 2011 division of Sudan redistributed much of the producing acreage, but significant reserves remain in Sudanese territory — in the Muglad and Blue Nile basins and offshore Red Sea zones. Independent surveys estimate Sudan's remaining technically recoverable reserves at 5–7 billion barrels of oil equivalent.
